    Some Good News!

Just before lunch today I had the seating appointment.  It was to discuss ordering a new wheelchair.  After going through every option all of us could think of my OT, the seating person and myself all came to the same conclusion.  A power wheelchair is the best option.  This doesn’t surprise me really.  The good news is, it should solve the seating issues I’ve been having and it would take a monster of a spasm to tip a power wheelchair over!

Some more good news was waiting for me when I returned to my room.  There was a folded sheet of paper on my bed that said “Imp.”  I was wary of having someone read it to me because I thought it may have been a note informing me that Duke was either going to be allowed here or not, and I was not in the mood to have to deal with lawyers, media etc. if it said he couldn’t again!  It was an email from my social worker here informing me about the rental approval!  I left a message to talk to the person whose number he left so hopefully she will get back to me very soon and I can start the process of moving my things from one accessible apt. where there is no accessible transportation to another accessible apt. where there is accessible transportation!

Would it be pushing my luck a bit too far to hope that good news really do come in three’s and that I will get news that Duke is allowed to work here too?

I realise it’s good news in that you’ll be getting mobility back but I have to say at the same time I’m sorry Kim. You worked so hard in rehab the first time not to end up in a power chair. I’m sure you’ll still be a force to be reckoned with…besides, you’ll be able to roll and hold your poking stick at the same time now!

It is good news in a way, but not so good in another. I guess a good compromise is to use my manual wheelchair inside my apt. and other places when I need it and the power wheelchair outside and other times it would be useful. I guess it’s good to have a choice and to take care of my shoulders because they will have to last me a long time! LOL! Yes, I will have more options when it comes to my poking stick, won’t I? *Evil laugh*

    I Have Chosen An Apartment

The Recreational Therapist took me to view two “accessible” apartments today.  I have made up my mind about which one I want to move to and will let the girl know tomorrow.  It wasn’t a hard decision really.  It’s quite a bit smaller than the one I have now, but it is in an area where Wheelway (the accessible bus service) goes and isn’t terribly far from everything in the city.  The best thing is the front loading washer and dryer!  I can do laundry again!  The building my current apt. is in has a top loading washer.  I never did mind doing laundry.  I actually find it kind of relaxing…

Are you going to be able to move into the apartment with the current state of your muscle spasms? My GP just started me on Robaxin because mine have very slowly become a little more intense.

I’m going to be in rehab for months. I’m just getting the apt. situation sorted out to be ready for when I am discharged. The apt. I have now isn’t near any accessible transportation, but the one I mentioned here is. I called the girl yesterday and left a message for her telling her I have decided I want it and as far as I know she hasn’t shown it to anyone else since I was there.

I hope that all goes well. I know how difficult it was to find ANY suitable apartment!

Thanks Chloe! It took me 8 months to find the first accessible apt., but two came up at the same time recently. It helps that the people who work here know where to look because they deal with finding accessible housing in the area quite a bit.
