For The First Time In 88 Days…

A little after 10AM today my OT, PT and another PT for back-up came into my room and got me out of bed using the lift.  This happens quite frequently, but the difference this time was that I was placed in my own wheelchair for the first time since the very early morning hours of April 30th!  After sitting for a few minutes, securing me to the backrest and adding a strap to make sure I didn’t tip over with spasms I managed to push myself down to the nurses’ station.  I felt like I was pulling the two PT’s behind me!  I knew my arms were weaker from not using them so much, but I wasn’t expecting them to be as weak as they were.  I’m not quite sure how much is because of the medication or the lack of as much use, but my shoulders are still a bit sore tonight over twelve hours later!

I did manage to push myself partway to the gym that’s down the hall and did a transfer to the hi-lo mat and back without a transfer board which is a start I guess.  I was spasming the whole time, but once I got back to my room I had a bigger spasm that straightened my body out most of the way.  It wasn’t enough to tip me over with all of the people around holding me, but it was enough to know that my wheelchair is still deemed unsafe for now.  I have an appointment with my OT and the seating person on Thursday at 11AM and hopefully they will listen to what I need and we can go from there.  The next step is to get a demo chair to use while we figure out what I will need once I leave here.  Wish me luck!  I think I’m going to need it…

Thinking of you a lot, and wishing you the best possible outcomes.

      Hi Kim,
Am I correct in thinking that it was nearly three months before you were able to use your own wheelchair? From reading this first account of yours (I apologize for being so late to the party here…narcissistic writer that I am, and all that), I am not sure why the powers that be deemed your wheelchair as still unsafe when it seemed you were doing quite well in it. What am I missing here?
      Your Friend,
      ~Danielle

Hi Danielle, Thank you for visiting my blog! You are correct. My wheelchair is considered unsafe because I have spasms that are strong enough to tip it over. Before I was admitted to the hospital I was coming out of it quite frequently because of spasms. It also doesn’t have anti-tippers or a seatbelt and all wheelchairs that are used by patients here (even their own) has to have these things before they are approved to be used.

Thank YOU Kim! I have so much to learn…can you educate me on what anti-tippers are like for a wheelchair? Their function seems obvious, but I am curious how they work, how expensive they are, etcetera.

You’re welcome. anti-tippers are the little wheels that some people have on their chairs that stick out behind the big rear wheels and are close to the ground. If the wheelchair tips backwards they prevent it from tipping completely over. Most have two small plastic wheels on each side of the tube, but you can also get ones that have one roller blade type wheel and various other styles. They basically all do the same function. By the time you buy the anti-tippers and hardware that fit your specific wheelchair the price can easily become a couple of hundred dollars or more.

Dear Body, Why Can’t You Find A Happy Medium?

Ever since my spinal cord injury I am usually cold. My body can’t regulate my temperature like it should anymore. Tonight however I am way too hot to the point where I have the window open and a fan pulling the outside air directly toward me. Even though I am only covered by a very thin sheet I am still not cooling down very well. If one of the Physio gyms on this floor were unlocked and I had someone to push me down there I would sit in the middle of the gym and enjoy the frigid air conditioning! I just realized there’s a really nice smell in the air that the fan is blowing towards me. It’s like a nice perfume or soap smell.

I heard there was a big heat wave coming up through Quebec. Is it there too?

Only if you consider between 11°C and 19°C for the next 14 days a “heat wave” lol!
