    The View From My Bed

This is the view from my bed out into the hallway.  Can you handle the excitement?  Duke, my guide/service dog can’t come here to work because the management chose to not follow the law and let him, so I spend about 90% of my time in bed, or sitting next to my bed in a wheelchair I can’t move.  It gets more than a bit boring after two months!  (Not including the five and a half week hospital stay.)  Especially when it’s busy and everyone else is going about their day.

Is it just yourself in your room at this point?

Yes, I’ve had a private room since the management decided that Duke could come here. Within days after I was moved they said he couldn’t…

If it was me I’d definitely prefer to share a room, so I’d have someone to talk to and be less bored.

I have a suggestion that I’m not quite sure where to put, so I’ll just put it here. I highly recommend that anyone following Kim here watch the “Couch Incident” video blog on WildKat TV. It gives added perspective and context for the current situation.

After sharing a room with many people I’d rather have my own. I don’t mind having roommates, but some of them can be… interesting…

I’ll have to make a new video. I am planning on adding some to this blog once I get a good reliable internet connection. (I’m suppose to on the 11th).

    Some Good News!

Just before lunch today I had the seating appointment.  It was to discuss ordering a new wheelchair.  After going through every option all of us could think of my OT, the seating person and myself all came to the same conclusion.  A power wheelchair is the best option.  This doesn’t surprise me really.  The good news is, it should solve the seating issues I’ve been having and it would take a monster of a spasm to tip a power wheelchair over!

Some more good news was waiting for me when I returned to my room.  There was a folded sheet of paper on my bed that said “Imp.”  I was wary of having someone read it to me because I thought it may have been a note informing me that Duke was either going to be allowed here or not, and I was not in the mood to have to deal with lawyers, media etc. if it said he couldn’t again!  It was an email from my social worker here informing me about the rental approval!  I left a message to talk to the person whose number he left so hopefully she will get back to me very soon and I can start the process of moving my things from one accessible apt. where there is no accessible transportation to another accessible apt. where there is accessible transportation!

Would it be pushing my luck a bit too far to hope that good news really do come in three’s and that I will get news that Duke is allowed to work here too?

I realise it’s good news in that you’ll be getting mobility back but I have to say at the same time I’m sorry Kim. You worked so hard in rehab the first time not to end up in a power chair. I’m sure you’ll still be a force to be reckoned with…besides, you’ll be able to roll and hold your poking stick at the same time now!

It is good news in a way, but not so good in another. I guess a good compromise is to use my manual wheelchair inside my apt. and other places when I need it and the power wheelchair outside and other times it would be useful. I guess it’s good to have a choice and to take care of my shoulders because they will have to last me a long time! LOL! Yes, I will have more options when it comes to my poking stick, won’t I? *Evil laugh*

I May Be Full, But The Management Is Full Of Something Else!

I am so full right now I can barely even type!  Thank you Mom!  My breakfast, dinner and supper trays were not what I had ordered today.  I think it may have been a day I didn’t even get a menu for.  I had a sandwich brought up from downstairs at 12:30PM thanks to the nurse who asked if I wanted one when I couldn’t eat anything on my tray (macaroni and cheese, mixed vegetables, pea soup and a blueberry crisp) and didn’t have anything else until after 7PM when I started eating the cooked supper my mom brought me.  It was o good!  I’m not use to flavor anymore lol.

My step-dad also brought me the TV that was in the rec room in their basement.  He was going to bring mr one of mine, but didn’t have time to stop at my apt. for long when he was there.  At least now I have something besides the internet to keep me occupied for a while since the management is making me spend all of my time in bed or sitting in the one place by not allowing Duke, my guide/service dog to work here.  They will have to eventually.  They are choosing to do things the hard way, but I am never going to give up!  Wish Duke and I lots of luck!  We shouldn’t need it, but it can’t hurt.

Wishing you and Duke luck. But I think it’s always your unrelenting persistence that makes stuff happen!

Things Are Starting To Move Along Quite Nicely

The process to get Duke here has finally actually really started! The Occupational Therapist said that I won’t have to stay in a wheelchair I can’t move (the tilt-in-space one that the manager said I might have to stay in) and that we will be looking into getting a power wheelchair, but that it could take awhile. I will also be moved to a private room later today. Things seem to be moving along quite nicely at the moment. Let’s hope everything happens this smoothly!

Fingers crossed for them getting on with the job and sorting everything out for you. Seems like you are finally moving forward. When does Duke arrive?

Some Potential Good News For A Change!

I think going to the media actually worked! The manager here stopped by around 1PM (along with the OT for back-up) and although she didn’t actually say “yes” she did say that they can’t prevent Duke, my guide/service dog from comeing her to work with me! I’ve been telling them this for weeks now, but what do I know? I’ve only had guide and service dogs for over 11 years…

Now they need to get me into a private room (I have my own room now, but it’s not a private room), get me a wheelchair I can acually use (not the 70+ pound tilting one they have me in now), make sure the wheelchair is safe for me to use and Duke should be able to come here! It’s about time! I’m giving them until Friday to sort things out…

That’s good news! Don’t let them mess you about with the room as Liz may use that as a way of delaying things. I am glad that she saw sense at last. Did the media report anything?

      • Kim & Duke 12:49 pm on July 11, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Don’t worry, I know what she’s like. She even mentioned how it might not be this room because there’s room for other people in it… She can’t fool me! I’m up to all her games and tricks. The media didn’t get a chance. I told her on Friday that if I didn’t hear from her, or she said “no” by 3:15PM I was going ahead with the various media, and that she would be hearing from them and my lawyer on Monday morning. She didn’t get back to me, so I went ahead and moved forward with things. I don’t know if the threat was enough, or if someone actually contacted her or Eastern Health. Whatever happened seemed to work though!

You need to stay on top of that. I am so pleased that she eventually had to capitulate, although I was relishing a bit of a bun fight in the media because that would have been fun lol! Maybe she did actually speak to a real lawyer who pointed out that she would be in deep shite if she carried on with her refusal to let Dukie in.

As much fun as it would have been, I’m glad it seems like it won’t have to go that far. I wasn’t out on a mission to make the place look bad. I just want them to follow the law and let me have him here with me. It does seem like she finally actually spoke to a real lawyer, or the “lawyer” she claimed to have spoken to actually took the time to read the law this time around!

Yes you are right, better to keep your powder dry for another day. If nothing else you have some interesting contacts in the media for work later on.

I shall be using those contacts very soon if things aren’t sorted out and Duke isn’t here!
